If you're a person living in 2015 who has a committed relationship with the Internet and is as sensitive to catch every trend that's going around, it's really possible that you have realized by now how the septum piercing has become quite the big trend for 2015 when it comes to accessorizing... it's also pretty possible that some friend of yours has one and now you're thinking on getting it since it's becoming such a thing. Then sit down little grasshopper, these are the things you need to know before getting one for real. We saw them on Givenchy a few seasons ago, we've seen it on FKA twigs, Lady Gaga, Pearl from RuPaul's Drag Race, Rihanna and even Jessica Biel. Whether is real or faux, tiny or big, ornamented or plain, the septum it's what the kids are doing nowadays, so before sneaking from your parents and hitting that piercing store, here's a few things you will want to take in consideration:

Si eres una persona viviendo en el 2015, que tiene una relación seria con el Internet y que además es híper-sensible a las tendencias que van y vienen, es bastante posible que para este momento te hayas dado cuenta que el septum piercing se ha convertido en una tendencia bastante grande para el 2015 en cuanto a accesorios se refiere... también es bastante probable que algún amigo tuyo se haya hecho uno y ahora estás pensando en hacerlo desde que se ha convertido en algo tan relevante. Si es ese es el caso, entonces siéntate pequeño saltamontes, estas son algunas de las cosas que debes saber antes de ir a la tienda a hacerte uno. Los vimos en Givenchy hace algunas temporadas, lo hemos visto en FKA twigs, Lady Gaga, Pearl de RuPaul's Drag Race, Rihanna e incluso Jessica Biel. Sea real o falso, grande o pequeño, ornamentado o sencillo, el septum es lo que los chicos están haciendo hoy en día, así que antes de escapar de tus padres y llegar a la tienda de piercings, aquí hay algunas cosas que debes tener en consideración:

The aftercare is quite simple... and a tad annoying at the beginning

So you're finally out of that shop, feeling proud about yourself and how well you did back there and now you have that little pain in the middle of your nose and off for everyone to see how awesome and fashion forward you look... and then what? How in the hell are you going to take care of it? Well, it's all quite simple and it doesn't involve that much of your time to take good care of it daily if you're as lazy as me. All you have to do now is clean it, and let it heal, that's it. But hey, all that is gold does not glitter, this is when it gets tricky. First of all, as son as you're out of the store make sure not to touch the piercing or move it from where it is because let's be honest, your hands are dirty from all that sweat you were dripping before getting the thing done. Second, you're still gonna feel a little pain in your nose for the next 4 to 6 days and even a touching the tip of your nose can feel a little painful, also, your nose it's going to be really sensitive, so no skimo kisses or sleeping face-down to the pillow for at least two weeks.

Los cuidados son bastante sencillos... y algo fastidiosos al principio

Entonces finalmente saliste de la tienda, sintiéndote orgullos@ de ti mismo por lo bien que resististe las ganas de llorar o desmayarte, pero ahora te queda un pequeño dolor en el medio de la nariz y te encaminas a que todo el mundo vea lo genial y vanguardista que eres... ¿y ahora qué? ¿Cómo demonios lo vas a cuidar? Pues la verdad es que el proceso es bastante sencillo y no involucra mucho de tu tiempo si eres una persona tan floja como yo. Todo lo que tienes que hacer es limpiarlo y dejarlo que se cure por sí solo. Pero hey, no todo lo que brilla es oro, aquí es cuando las cosas se ponen mañosas. Primero que todo, tan pronto salgas de la tienda asegúrate de no tocar el piercing o de moverlo porque, seamos sinceros, tus manos estas sucias de todo lo que sudaste antes de que te pincharan la nariz. En segundo lugar, seguirás sintiendo ése dolor en tu nariz por lo menos durante lo próximos 4 a 6 días y además, tu nariz estará bastante sensible y sólo tocarla un poco puede dolerte, así que nada de besitos de esquimal ni dormir boca abajo contra la almohada por las primeras 2 semanas.

How do I clean it?

You have two choices and it all depends on what you feel comfortable doing and what you have in hand. You can just clean it twice a day with a little saline solution (or a mix of sea salt and water), rubbing the whole piercing with a Q-tip and making sure you leave the piece smooth and clear of the dirty stuff on your nose. Or you can also clean it twice a day with an anti-bacterial soap, what I usually do is making foam with my hands clean and rubbing a little of it where the septum is with my fingers, making sure the piercing is clean, then I just run some water over it and I pat it dry with a Q-tip. You can also apply some healing cream on it to speed the process, but it's not really necessary.

¿Cómo lo limpio?

Tienes dos opciones, ambas dependen de lo que te sientas más cómod@ haciendo y lo que tengas a la mano. Puedes simplemente limpiarlo con una solución salina (o una mezcla de agua y sal marina) dos veces al día, frotando un Q-tip por toda la pieza, asegurándote de limpiarla y dejarla libre de la suciedad de tu nariz. También puedes limpiar la pieza con jabón anti-bacterial, yo acostumbre a hacer espuma con el jabón con mis manos limpias y luego limpiar la pieza con mis dedos, luego lo limpio con agua y seco la pieza con un Q-tip. También puedes aplicar algo de crema cicatrizante para apresurar el proceso, pero no es realmente necesario.

Boogers, the boogers!

Yes, this is the part when it stops being chic because, you know, we're humans, we're naturally quite dirty, so there are some dirty things you've got to know about this piercing... and maybe not everyone who's gotten it are telling you about them. Yes, it is going to get all the dirt from your boogers, all that dirt your nose is sucking in is going to get stucked and get a little crusty around the insides of your septum... don't pick it unless you have your hands clean and make sure to clean it twice every day for two weeks, oh and  if you're going through a cold or have a runny nose, things are gonna get a little annoying, so make sure your nose is clean and booger-free and if you feel things are getting a little too boogery up there, you can pick a Q-tip and pat it dry.

Mocos, ¡los mocos!

Sí, hay algunas cosas sucias que tienes que saber acerca del septum... y quizás no todo el mundo te las está diciendo. Sí, el piercing se va a ensuciar de mocos, todo el sucio del ambiente que tu nariz está absorbiendo se quedará pegado y se secará en la parte interna de tu nariz, especialmente en la zona donde pasó la aguja... ¡no te saques los mocos a menos que tengas las manos limpias! y asegúrate de limpiarlo dos veces al día por al menos las dos primeras semanas... y si tienes gripe o estás sufriendo de congestión nasal, las cosas se pondrán un poco (muy) fastidiosas, así que asegúrate de que tu nariz esté limpia y libre de mocos y si sientes que las cosas se están poniendo mocosas allá arriba, busca un Q-tip y limpialo dándole pequeños toques.

Finally, you have made it. You've clean your nose as clean it can be, you've made sure your septum is fully healed and after two months have passed, you're ready for the experimentation. You can now switch your piercing as you wish and you are free to go as crazy as you wanna go with it. Now you shall make sure these precious tips get to someone who needs them... and if after all this you're still unsure of if you could rock a septum, you can try and do what I did for the first month I was experimenting with it and get some faux ones before you go get it done, they're everywhere now, in every shape and color and best of all... pain-free.

Finalmente, lo has logrado. Limpiaste tu nariz tanto como fuera posible y ya tu septum piercing está completamente curado luego de dos meses, ahora viene la parte divertida, la experimentación. Ahora puedes cambiar las piezas tanto como quieras y tienes toda la libertad de volverte tan loco como puedas con tus elecciones. Ahora asegúrate de pasarle estas preciosas palabras de ayuda a cualquiera que las necesite... y si luego de toda esta cháchara todavía te sientes inseguro de si podrás lucir bien con un septum, puedes hacer lo que yo hice durante el primer mes y comprar uno falso antes de hacerlo. Están en todos lados, en cualquier forma y color y lo mejor de todo es que no duelen.

Oh, and please make sure whoever is going to get your nose pierced has experience in the matter, don't go cheap on this one since your nose and specially your nasal septum area is pretty sensitive, make sure you feel safe in the environment you're getting it done and that whoever is doing it to you has all his implements clean and they're using a brand new needle. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T GO ICE AND STERILIZED NEEDLE ON THIS ONE.

Ah, y por favor, asegúrate de que quién sea vaya a pircear tu nariz tenga experiencia en el caso, no elijas lo más barato para esta ocasión, ten en cuenta que tu nariz y especialmente la zona del septum nasal es un área bastante sensible; está segur@ de sentirte cómod@ en el lugar en el que lo realicen y que quienquiera que lo esté haciendo tenga todos sus implementos limpios y que usen una aguja nueva de paquete. ¡Y POR EL AMOR A DIOS, NO LO HAGAS CON HIELO Y UNA AGUJA ESTERILIZADA!
